Cash session hours in SAST, the volatile US open, why extended hours are thinner than they look, and the US data times that move all three.
Quick Answer:
- For US30, the window worth trading is the first hour of the New York cash session: 16:30–17:30 SAST from early November to early March, and 15:30–16:30 SAST from mid-March to late October.
- For NAS100, the same open applies, but the index keeps moving through the whole US afternoon, so the usable window runs to the cash close at 23:00 SAST in winter and 22:00 in summer.
- For GER30, the active period is the Frankfurt morning — 10:00–12:00 SAST in winter, 09:00–11:00 in summer — and then again from the US open, when it starts taking its direction from New York.
Trading involves significant risk of loss and is not suitable for everyone. This is not financial advice.
Index Hours in SAST
South Africa does not observe daylight saving, so SAST stays at UTC+2 all year while New York and Frankfurt move, and every session below arrives an hour earlier on your clock during the northern-hemisphere summer. At FXPrimus the three symbols are .DJ, .ND and .DE30 (Xetra DAX), all with contract size 10 and a 1% margin requirement per the indices page.
| Index | Cash session, SAST (summer) | Cash session, SAST (winter) | Extended hours, SAST | Daily break, SAST |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| US30 (.DJ) | 15:30–22:00 | 16:30–23:00 | 00:00–15:30 (summer), 01:00–16:30 (winter) | 23:00–00:00 (summer), 00:00–01:00 (winter) |
| NAS100 (.ND) | 15:30–22:00 | 16:30–23:00 | Same as US30 | Same as US30 |
| GER30 (.DE30) | 09:00–17:30 | 10:00–18:30 | From 02:10 to the 22:00 close (summer) or 23:00 (winter) | Set per symbol — check the platform |
The cash rows come from the underlying exchanges: 09:30 to 16:00 New York time, and 09:00 to 17:30 Frankfurt time on Xetra. The extended rows come from the futures that price these CFDs outside cash hours — CME equity index contracts, which run from Sunday 17:00 Chicago time with an hour of maintenance daily, and Eurex, whose DAX future trades 01:10 to 22:00 CET per its 2026 trading calendar. Platform hours are set per symbol, so confirm them by right-clicking the instrument in MT4 or MT5 Market Watch and opening Specification.
US30: The First Hour Does the Work
The Dow’s session starts with an auction, not a drift. Orders accumulated overnight execute in the opening minutes, and the resulting range in the first 30 to 60 minutes is often the widest of the day, which is why South African traders who can only watch one hour usually pick this one. In winter that is 16:30 to 17:30 SAST, in summer 15:30 to 16:30.
Two features shape how that hour behaves. US30 holds only 30 companies and is price-weighted, so one high-priced constituent moving several percent drags the index in a way that has nothing to do with the broader market, and its industrial and financial tilt means it answers to growth and rate data rather than technology news. On cost, the FXPrimus average spread of 340 points on .DJ is 3.40 index points, or about 34 quote-currency units per lot at contract size 10 — a real number against a stop measured in tens of points.
NAS100: Same Clock, Different Behaviour
NAS100 opens on the same bell but does not calm down the way the Dow often does. It concentrates technology and growth names under modified market-cap weighting, so it reacts harder to anything repricing interest rate expectations, and its intraday ranges are wider in both points and percentage terms. That extends the usable window past the first hour and through to the cash close at 22:00 or 23:00 SAST, where closing auctions concentrate volume again.
Cost follows the same logic: the .ND average spread of 470 points is 4.70 index points, roughly 47 quote-currency units per lot against 34 on the Dow. The wider quote is earned by the wider range, but the stop has to come from this instrument’s volatility rather than from a distance carried over from US30.
GER30: The European Morning Is Its Own Market
GER30 is the only one of the three whose session fits a South African working day. Xetra opens at 10:00 SAST in winter and 09:00 in summer, and the first two hours are genuinely European: German and euro-area data, ECB commentary and Frankfurt order flow drive it without reference to US futures. That independence is the argument for trading it in the morning rather than waiting for New York.
That changes when New York opens. From 15:30 or 16:30 SAST the DAX follows US index futures, amplifying their direction rather than setting its own, then closes at 17:30 or 18:30 SAST while the US session runs on. The ECB rate decision at 14:15 CET — 14:15 SAST in summer, 15:15 in winter, with the press conference 30 minutes later — is the one scheduled event that belongs to GER30 rather than to the US indices.
Extended Hours Look Tradeable and Mostly Are Not
Outside the cash session the chart keeps printing, which creates the impression that the index is trading normally at 07:00 SAST. It is not. The quote comes from the futures book alone, volume is a fraction of cash-session volume, spreads are wider, and a clean-looking breakout at 09:00 SAST is frequently erased in the first minute after the cash open.
Levels formed in those hours also attract stops, and thin books are where stops fill at the worst available price. If your day genuinely cannot include 15:30 or 16:30 SAST, GER30 during the Frankfurt morning is a more honest answer than US30 during its extended hours.
Do US30 and NAS100 Move Together?
Most of the time, yes: both are US large-cap benchmarks responding to the same rate expectations, risk sentiment and economic calendar. Holding long US30 and long NAS100 is close to holding one position twice, and sizing them as two independent trades is the common error.
Four things break the relationship, and knowing them is the practical value of the correlation question. Rate expectations move NAS100 harder, because growth and technology valuations are more sensitive to discount rates. A single megacap earnings report can move NAS100 several percent while the Dow barely registers it. The Dow’s price weighting means one expensive constituent can push US30 independently of the market. And sector rotation into banks, industrials or energy lifts US30 while pulling money out of the technology names that dominate NAS100.
US Releases in SAST
These are the moments that move all three indices at once, and they are published on New York time, so their SAST times shift twice a year.
| Release | New York time | SAST (summer) | SAST (winter) |
|---|---|---|---|
| CPI, Non-Farm Payrolls, PPI, retail sales | 08:30 | 14:30 | 15:30 |
| ISM, JOLTS, consumer sentiment | 10:00 | 16:00 | 17:00 |
| FOMC statement | 14:00 | 20:00 | 21:00 |
| FOMC press conference | 14:30 | 20:30 | 21:30 |
The 08:30 releases land an hour before the cash open, when the futures book is thin and the reaction is least reliable. The FOMC statement lands deep inside the US cash session but after Frankfurt has closed, so GER30 gaps to the outcome the next morning rather than trading it live. Check dates on the economic calendar before planning a session around any of them.
Frequently Asked Questions
When is the best time to trade US30 in South Africa?
The first hour of the New York cash session: 16:30 to 17:30 SAST from early November to early March, and 15:30 to 16:30 SAST from mid-March to late October.
What is the best time to trade NAS100 and GER30 in South Africa?
NAS100 shares the US open but stays worth watching to the 22:00 or 23:00 SAST cash close. GER30 is the only one of the three whose main session fits a normal working day, and its European-led window is the Frankfurt morning.
What are US30 and NAS100 trading hours in SAST?
Both track the US cash session: 16:30 to 23:00 SAST in the northern winter and 15:30 to 22:00 in the northern summer, plus futures-priced quoting outside those hours with about an hour of daily maintenance around midnight.
What are DAX or GER30 trading hours in South Africa?
Xetra’s cash session is 10:00 to 18:30 SAST in winter and 09:00 to 17:30 in summer. The Eurex DAX future quotes from 02:10 SAST, which is why the CFD prints a price long before Frankfurt opens.
Why do the session times change during the year?
South Africa holds UTC+2 year round while New York and Frankfurt shift by an hour, on different dates. In 2026 the US changed on 8 March and changes back on 1 November; the European change was 29 March and is 25 October.
