Quick Answer: Each pair has its own window, because each is driven by different trading centres. Times below are shown as northern winter (early November to early March) and northern summer (late March to late October); SAST itself never changes.
| Pair | Window worth trading (SAST) | Session | Spread condition |
|---|---|---|---|
| EUR/USD | 15:00–18:30 winter · 14:00–17:30 summer | London–New York overlap | Tightest of the three; indicative average 0.9 pips on PrimusCLASSIC |
| GBP/USD | 10:00–12:00 winter · 09:00–11:00 summer, then the overlap | London open | Wider quote and wider range; indicative average 1.5 pips |
| USD/JPY | 15:00–18:30 winter · 14:00–17:30 summer | New York data hours | Widest quote in pips; indicative average 2.2 pips |
Spreads are indicative averages from the FXPrimus forex specifications, self-reported and variable. All three widen sharply at the daily rollover.

EUR/USD: The London Open and the Overlap
EUR/USD is the deepest market in forex, and its SAST day has two peaks. The first is the London open (10:00 SAST, or 09:00 from late March), when European banks price the overnight news and set the morning range. The second matters more for most traders here: the London–New York overlap, 15:00–18:30 SAST from November and 14:00–17:30 from late March.
The overlap carries almost every event that moves the pair. The ECB decision and press conference, US CPI and payrolls, and the WM/Reuters benchmark fix at 16:00 London time all land inside it — exact SAST times are in the events table below. Flows into the fix often produce a final burst before London closes.
On cost, the indicative 0.9-pip average on the commission-free account is $9.00 per standard lot. After London closes the pair keeps trading on US flow alone, and ranges usually compress into the evening.
GBP/USD: Earlier Start, Wider Range
Cable is a London pair in a way EUR/USD is not. UK data prints at 07:00 London time — 09:00 SAST, or 08:00 from late March — before the London session has opened on your clock. The pair then tends to make its biggest morning move in the first two hours of London.
The Bank of England announces at 12:00 London time, just before New York joins. From there GBP/USD trades the same US data as EUR/USD, with a wider range in both directions. That range is the attraction and the cost: the indicative 1.5-pip average is $15.00 per lot against $9.00 for EUR/USD, so stops and targets have to be scaled to the pair rather than copied across.
For a South African trader the difference is timing: GBP/USD rewards a morning session, and it is the natural choice if you can trade 09:00 to 11:00 SAST but not the afternoon.
USD/JPY and the JPY Crosses
Japan does not observe daylight saving either, so Tokyo’s hours are fixed on your clock all year: 02:00 to 11:00 SAST. The Tokyo fix at 09:55 JST lands at 02:55 SAST, and Bank of Japan decisions, which have no set release time, usually arrive around midday in Tokyo — the early hours of the morning in South Africa. The yen’s home session is therefore mostly unavailable to anyone keeping normal hours.
That matters less than it looks, because USD/JPY is driven by US yields more than by anything in Tokyo. The moves that count come from US data and the rate outlook, so the tradable window is the same afternoon block as EUR/USD. The indicative 2.2-pip average is about $14.97 per lot at an illustrative rate of 147.00, because one pip is worth ¥1,000 per lot converted back into dollars.
The yen crosses behave differently. EUR/JPY and GBP/JPY are most active when Tokyo’s afternoon overlaps London’s morning — 09:00 to 11:00 SAST in the northern summer, only 10:00 to 11:00 once London is back on GMT. They also carry wider quotes, indicative averages of 2.6 and 3.6 pips or roughly $17.69 and $24.49 per lot at the same rate.
Dead Hours and Rollover
For all three pairs the expensive hours are the same. After New York closes at 23:00 SAST in summer and midnight in winter, liquidity falls away until Tokyo opens at 02:00 SAST. The daily rollover at 17:00 New York time sits inside that gap — 23:00 SAST in summer, 00:00 in winter — and spreads routinely widen to several times their average while banks close their books.
A stop resting a few pips from price in those hours can be hit by the spread alone, with no real move in the market. The evening between the London close and rollover is quieter but tradable; the hour either side of rollover is not. Broader session context is in the guide to forex trading hours in South Africa.
Scheduled Events in SAST
These are the recurring releases that decide the window for each pair. They are published in local time in London, Frankfurt, New York or Tokyo, so their SAST times shift twice a year — except Tokyo’s.
| Event | Local time | SAST (winter) | SAST (summer) | Moves most |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| UK data | 07:00 London | 09:00 | 08:00 | GBP/USD |
| Bank of England decision | 12:00 London | 14:00 | 13:00 | GBP/USD |
| ECB decision | 14:15 Frankfurt | 15:15 | 14:15 | EUR/USD |
| US CPI and payrolls | 08:30 New York | 15:30 | 14:30 | All three |
| WM/Reuters fix | 16:00 London | 18:00 | 17:00 | EUR/USD, GBP/USD |
| FOMC statement | 14:00 New York | 21:00 | 20:00 | All three |
| Tokyo fix | 09:55 Tokyo | 02:55 | 02:55 | USD/JPY |
In 2026 the US moved its clocks on 8 March and moves back on 1 November, while the UK and eurozone changed on 29 March and change back on 25 October. In the weeks between, the London–New York overlap runs 14:00 to 18:30 SAST — an hour longer than usual. Check the economic calendar for exact dates each week.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the best time to trade EUR/USD in South Africa?
The London–New York overlap: 15:00 to 18:30 SAST from early November to early March, and 14:00 to 17:30 SAST from late March to late October. The London open at 10:00 or 09:00 SAST is the secondary window.
What is the best time to trade USD/JPY in South Africa?
The same afternoon block as EUR/USD, because US data and yields drive the pair. Tokyo’s own session runs 02:00 to 11:00 SAST, which is mostly outside normal hours.
Is GBP/USD better in the morning or the afternoon?
It is more distinctive in the morning. UK data lands before the London open on your clock, and the first two hours of London usually carry the pair’s largest move before the US session takes over.
Why do these trading times change during the year?
South Africa holds UTC+2 all year, while London, Frankfurt and New York shift an hour for daylight saving on different dates. Tokyo does not shift, so USD/JPY’s Asian hours are the only ones that stay put.
Why is the spread wider on USD/JPY than on EUR/USD?
Partly liquidity and partly arithmetic. A pip on USD/JPY is worth ¥1,000 per lot rather than $10, and the pair’s average quote in pips is wider, so the dollar cost per lot ends up well above EUR/USD’s.
Key Takeaways
- EUR/USD: the overlap, 15:00–18:30 SAST (Nov–Mar) or 14:00–17:30 (late Mar–Oct)
- GBP/USD: the London morning, 10:00–12:00 or 09:00–11:00 SAST, then the overlap
- USD/JPY: the US afternoon window; Tokyo’s 02:00–11:00 SAST session is mostly out of reach
- JPY crosses are most active in the Tokyo–London overlap and carry wider quotes
- Rollover at 23:00 or 00:00 SAST is where spreads widen most — stay out of the hour around it
